Dealing with a Flooded Basement? Here's How it Could Have Happened!

This post is contributed and contains links.

Flooding is common and can occur in any season of the year, but it's more prevalent in the fall and winter months when the rainfall is often higher. If you are living somewhere that snows through the winter or rains in the fall, then you'll be well aware of how difficult it can be to manage flooding. It doesn't matter whether your basement has been used for storage or you have put together a games room or a home theater down there. You need to understand how to deal with flooded basements as they happen.

Not all basements are created equal, which means that you need to ensure that you are aware of your specific basement type. For example, if you have drains around the edge of your basement, then drain unclogging services used a couple of times a year can prevent flooding that happens due to a clogged drain. However, not all floods occur for that reason. You don't want to have your basement tarnished by flooding, so with that in mind, we've put together a list of how your basement can flood.

  • You have leaky windows. Did you know that you can actually deal with leaky windows in your home? If your window is leaking, then drafts can come in, and when drafts can go in, so can water. Condensation could drip into the space where the leaks are occurring, and rainfall outside can slip through the cracks. One of the best ways to prevent this is with caulking. You can install window well covers to ensure that water doesn't collect in the gutter spouts and that it has somewhere to drain. You may also need to consider replacing your windows, or at least your window frames.

  • You don't have enough insulation in the foundation of your home. If the basement itself is poorly insulated, you may end up with flooding. Having a building inspector come out to check this is important. A basement that is not properly insulated can end up with more flooding chances, and it's one of the most significant factors in flooded basements. If you don't, ensure that you have a good insulation system. And that it's in good condition, you may end up with some issues later on.

  • Drainage sucks. We already talked about drain unclogging services, but what does the drainage look like around your home at the moment? If you ensure that you have adequate drainage in place, you will ensure that your home and the areas around it remain dry. Water can and will seep into the basement if the system is not correctly installed. If the gutters around your home are clogged up, this could also lead to water making its way to your basement.

Now that you understand the things that can flood your basement, it's time to ensure that you do everything possible to keep your basement from getting wet. A dry basement is a healthy basement with these tips can help.
