Moving can be a great way to explore the world, meet new people, and explore new work opportunities. However, it can also lead to isolation, high costs and difficulty staying in touch with family and friends.

In this post, we take a look at some of the smart questions you need to ask before moving. Check them out below.

Am I Moving At The Right Time?

The real estate market chops and changes wildly over time. Sometimes, prices are riding high while other times, they’re in a slump.

Generally, people like to move over the summer months. The weather is better and there is less chance of the whole thing being rained off. However, it is also more expensive. Furthermore, various sporting events and other difficulties might stymie your plans.

Am I Moving To A Good Neighborhood

You may love the property you’ve found but if it’s in a bad neighborhood, you might not enjoy living there for long. When you visit, ask around and find out more about the area. Use online portals to check for things such as crime levels, noise pollution, air pollution and the overall home sale price trends. Also explore whether businesses are moving in and out of the area, and what type of industries are setting up nearby.

What Type Of Transportation Will I Use?

Try factoring in the cost of transportation into your calculations whenever you choose to live in a new home. Whether you need to use a vehicle or not could potentially raise your costs substantially.

Is your new accommodation near a major transport hub? If so, you might be able to use the train or bus to get around. Is it a long way out of town? In that case, your only option might be to get a car.

Is The Location A Good Culture Fit?

Cultures vary considerably by location. The type of people who live in the middle of affluent cities tend to be quite different in their views from those who live in rural settings.

You’ll want to explore your values and ask yourself whether they line up with the people you’ll be brushing shoulders with. Find out if it is a culture fit and offers the type of amenities that you need to live your preferred lifestyle.

Is It Affordable?

You’ll also want to ask yourself whether the location is affordable. Finding an apt for rent that comes in under budget should be a priority. Living with your back against the wall financially is not fun.

Ideally, you don’t want rental or mortgage payments to exceed 35 percent of your gross annual income. If you start dedicating more than this, you’ll struggle to support your lifestyle and may actually regret moving. Remember, last-minute expenses crop up all the time.

Does Anyone I Know Live Nearby?

Lastly, you should ask yourself whether you know anyone who lives nearby who could potentially help you out in the event of an emergency. It’s always good to have a local contact you can call on, just in case.
